Bridal Etiquette Series: I’m Engaged! Who Should I Tell First?

Congratulations! Your future husband finally popped the big question, there’s a rock on your finger and you’re well on your way to becoming a bride. There’s no denying the rush of excitement that comes with being engaged, which is made even more exhilarating by phone calls, texts and a Facebook timeline full of well wishes from family and friends. And here lies your first Bridal Etiquette lesson: before taking to social media to post your big news and diving into your plans for a beautiful Alabama or Georgia wedding, carefully consider the individuals most important to you and your fiancé who might be hurt to hear about your engagement second hand.

Post-proposal celebrations with family and close friends are common these days, but if you have other plans, spread the news starting with your parents – whether in person or through a phone call. Let’s face it: your parents deserve the first call – especially if you expect them to pay for the wedding in any capacity. After you’ve told both sets of parents, feel free to call or email anyone else you’re close to, including grandparents, siblings, godparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and close friends. Finally, don’t forget to notify your boss and coworkers with whom you work directly. This will keep you from any awkward situations when you walk into work flashing a new smile and a new diamond.
