She Said Yes: Simrin Patheja

In this edition of our She Said Yes series, we introduce you to Simrin and Jimmy. We are anxiously awaiting this pair tying the knot in a multicultural (hello Indian reception!) and colorful wedding at Atlanta’s own Biltmore Ballrooms this December. But until then, we’ll keep swooning over both their e-sesh and proposal story. Read on below and discover how Jimmy popped the question on a dreamy and fateful snowmobile ride in the Canadian rockies.

How did you meet?

Jimmy and I met while we were both attending the University of Alabama. He was in a fraternity that was really close with my sorority. One night our fraternity and sorority had a social event together and Jimmy and I met there. He talked with me for almost two hours straight and we continued to stay in contact after that! We both went to multiple date parties with each other for our fraternity or sorority. We just kind of kept talking and going out together and never stopped!

Tell us your proposal story.

Simrin and I had been dating about five years so both of us knew we were in it for the long haul. I had been thinking about proposing before she went back to school for anesthesia. I got a call from her dad in August that her family wanted to go on a big vacation for Christmas….and they wanted me to tag along. Never passing up a good opportunity, I knew it was the perfect time and place to propose with her family involved.

I only called her parents about my idea (her siblings can’t keep any secrets) and they were ecstatic. What made the idea even better was that we were going to Whistler, Canada to ski for a week, and I’ve been an avid skier since I was little. I worked with her parents to plan the perfect proposal and we ended up deciding to take a snowmobiling tour up the mountains. We contacted the snowmobile tour guides early to let them know of my proposal plan, and they were really excited to be a part of the big day and even brought along a photographer.  The entire tour (not to mention the majority of the trip that passed before I proposed) I was constantly checking my pocket to make sure the ring was still there.

We all had separate snowmobiles, and on the way up we actually had a little mishap. We were taking a small turn, each on separate snowmobiles, and the snow under Simrin’s snowmobile fell apart and flipped on top of her in a ditch. Luckily the machine landed on a tree and not her and she was unharmed. The accident took six guys to flip and lift the snowmobile out of the almost three feet of snow.

Once we were back up and running, we made it to the top of the cliff that overlooked part of Whistler and Blackcomb Mountain as well as the Olympic park for the Vancouver 2010 Olympics. We were all taking pictures and I asked Simrin for just a picture of her and I. When her whole family and the tour guides all lined up with cameras in hand, she knew this was not an ordinary picture. I shared a few words  and quoted one of my favorites, Mark Twain, and through all the tears and whirlwind of thoughts she said yes!

Simrin, tell us what you love about Jimmy.

The thing I love most is that Jimmy is that he is my best friend. We are both so incredibly similar and can have fun doing anything together. I love that he is so easy going and always puts the needs of others before himself. He always keeps me laughing and knows how to take my mind off school when I am overly stressed. I love that he is always so incredibly supportive of me, even if it means moving two hours away to go to school and living apart for two years after we get married, so that I can finish school. He has the biggest heart and not a single angry bone in his body.

I remember when we first started dating and I was introduced to multiple people in his fraternity and when I would tell them I was dating Jimmy, every one of them would tell me how great of a guy he was and that he was one of the nicest people they knew. I love that he gets along with my family so well and I am pretty sure my family thought of him as a member long before we got engaged. I am so lucky to spend the rest of my life with someone who I know will always support me through anything and be my best friend!

Jimmy, tell us what you love about Simrin.

Trying not to copy everything Simrin said, she is my best friend and has been since the first few months we met and started getting to know each other. She has a sense of humor and the same love for music, food, movies, TV shows, as well as travel that is identical to mine. Her ambition in life is incredible and she constantly pushes me to be the best person possible. She is someone that I can always count on to be there when I need her most, and she is the most loving and selfless person I have ever met. Her constant support is unwavering, through school and tackling the CPA exam, up through the start and continuation of my career.

Whenever I have an idea/thought/aspiration (no matter how great or dumb the idea may be) she always does her best to support me through to the end. My family has accepted Simrin since the minute they met her because they could immediately see what a genuine, caring, loving, smart, and accepting person she is. I am extremely fortunate to be able to spend the rest of my life with her until the very end.

What’s interesting about your relationship that we may not know?

One interesting fact about us is that we both have an extreme love for Cavalier King Charles. It started with my family’s dog, Charlie, that was the sweetest cavalier and had the best personality . Jimmy would always send me texts being so excited whenever he saw one and even stopped a lady at a store to ask to pet her two cavaliers she had with her! I on the other hand would send him multiple pictures of puppies daily, especially ones from the Cavalier Rescue of Alabama and try to convince him to get one. We have even been on trips together and stopped strangers to ask to pet their cavaliers. Sadly we don’t have one at the moment, but we plan on having at least two when I finish school!

Thank you Simrin and Jimmy for sharing your story with us! We couldn’t be more delighted to celebrate you later this year. For more of our She Said Yes series, click here.
