Kelly and Matt – a wedding review

Another wedding to feature! Yay! Today I give you Kelly and Matt. Kelly was another breeze of a bride. I worked with Kelly and her mother, JoAnne, for about a year to plan their beautiful wedding in Auburn, Ala. Kelly and Matt were looking for an elegant, southern wedding where they met and fell in love – Auburn. Being members of First Baptist Church Opelika, they decided to have the ceremony there. Reception would be held at the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Art in Auburn.

This was another ivory and green wedding design. We all took cues from the clean lines of the museum and the fresh feel that comes with a June wedding date to come to the simple color palette and decor scheme. Side note: I’m really loving what this particular color palette does for a wedding. Ivory – classic wedding color. Green – basic color found in nature. You cannot go wrong. If you haven’t visited Jule Collins Smith Museum, I highly recommend that you do so. The museum itself is great. And as a reception venue, I’m in love with it. When I mentioned that I’m a less is more kind of gal (see Brooke and Tom’s feature), I wasn’t kidding. The museum offers the perfect backdrop to a formal setting, but has the ability to be light and airy. There is no point to having anything overdone there. The building is art itself. No need to fight with that. We enlisted the talents of Kim Nelson of Kimberly Nelson Floral Designs to create floral arrangements that gave a traditional ceremony setting at the church, then pieces that complimented the architecture of the museum for the reception. White tulips were the main flowers and it came off flawlessly.

Beyond good design, Kelly and Matt were another super easy couple to work with. Throughout all the planning, Kelly was just a happy camper. She’s one of those types that really doesn’t ask for a whole lot. Which makes you want to do more for her. Even her mom said as much. In the end, she and Matt had a beautiful wedding, a great time with their guests and a thrilled planner. So, enjoy their photos by the one and only Rob Smith of Flip Flop Foto. Beautiful work as always.

Wedding Inspiration – Winter

It’s about 1,000 degrees and 200% humidity here in Alabama and it has made me dream of a lusciously cold winter fete. Although, I have to admit that it is more than the lack of oppressively hot weather that attracts me to a winter wedding. I think that there is something innately romantic about a winter affair. The quiet that comes with the winter. The peacefulness and mystery of a snowy winter scene. The juxtaposition of watching a roaring fire and drinking warm libations while the outside world is blanketed in cold. It’s a study in contrasts and I love it.

So, while I have been pinning away at various wedding inspiration boards, winter scenes have been popping up and I thought that I would give us all a reprieve from the heat and discuss my thoughts on winter wedding design. To start out, I have to explain the difference between the words design and theme. I, personally, don’t like to use the word theme when it comes to weddings. Themes are for children’s parties. Not weddings. Design is something that will stand the test of time. Something that will be meaningful to the couple. I believe that a design is meant to support the event’s purpose. It is the environment. Not the focus. A theme is a focus and it will inevitably take away from the reason for the event – the couple’s love and commitment to each other. If you create a design that is the environment to support the event, it will be effortless and natural. Beautiful, yes. But, nothing that will overshadow the reason for the wedding.

Now that we are all clear on that point, on to the design. I know that this particular scene that I am setting isn’t necessarily achievable here in Alabama. While we do get snow, it is always on the most unbelievable day possible and completely unpredictable – like, we had snow on Christmas day last year. Who would have thought?!? Just keep in mind that I pack light. Well, not really. But, I would be super happy to travel to the Rockies where I would love to see this wedding happen. What I am really going for is an atmosphere of warmth and elegant coziness. Refined rustic. Kind of what I always want my Christmas Eve to feel like, if I were lucky enough to have it in the mountains. Anticipation and wonder. An air of magic. The feeling that even though you are dressed up for a celebration, you are relaxed because you are with your most favorite people ever.

So, here is a beginning to an inspiration board that I started for this winter fantasy wedding. See all of it here: http://pinterest.com/invisionwedding/wedding-designs-that-need-to-happen/

Brooke and Tom: Classic Wedding Design {Callaway Gardens, Pine Mountain, Ga}

After last week’s post about candid photos where Brooke and Tom were featured amongst other favorites of mine, I realized that not only was their wedding truly one of my favorite designs ever (I know I say this a lot, but seriously. Seriously.), I have not actually featured their wedding here on the blog. Their photos have popped up here and there for things, but no actual feature. How could I?!? So, I am making up for lost time and giving you a much needed feature of their classic wedding.

When Brooke and I met for the first time, it was clear that she and Tom fit with my design style perfectly. Nothing overdone. Nothing that will take away from the importance of the events. Simple and refined. Clean lines. Simple color palette. I knew it was going to be gorgeous. They had chosen The Discovery Center at Callaway Gardens as their setting. This building is completely done in light colored wood (floors, beams, ceilings) and has one entire side of the building with floor to ceiling windows. It also fit the clean lines and simple backdrop that they were going for. Brooke chose ivory and and sage green as her color palette. With the wood tones of Discovery Center, the palette was perfect. Brooke lives my mantra of less is more and everything about their wedding was just like that. Less is more. I was really excited to work with them as their wedding planner.

Since weddings at Callaway Gardens end up being more or less destination weddings, Brooke and Tom spent all weekend with their guests. People arriving on Thursday and Friday morning. Golf tournament (winner given a prize at the reception), rehearsal dinner, etc. They had a very full time with their guests. Something I wish for all my clients, but doesn’t always happen unless you are away from everything. They had a great time.

To get to what everyone wants to see, here is their wedding in a recap. Wedding photos by The Decisive Moment. Gorgeous. Exactly what Brooke wanted. And, I’m a big fan too. If you know me at all, you know that I will have to start with the printing. Brooke and Tom had some of the most cohesive and comprehensive wedding printing of any client I’ve had. I love it. Everything just fit perfectly. So, enjoy!

Congratulations again to Brooke and Tom! You guys are a fabulous couple, so fun to work with and had a gorgeous wedding. Cheers!

Floral ideas from Jess Margeson of Frou Frou

Hello readers! I am way excited to introduce you to my very first guest blogger! After my post on DIY wedding projects (see it here), I immediately thought of our own local crafty genius, Jess Margeson of Frou Frou, Inc. Jess gives her own touch to events on various scales. She can tackle true craft projects such as a life size tree made entirely of paper for an escort card display at one of my favorite weddings we’ve worked on together – or my one of my favorite weddings period. Or, she can handle fresh floral arrangements. She has a crafter’s heart and a southern bent – a killer combo! So, I asked her to chime in on some things that she has been inspired by for events and weddings. She was so kind to want to contribute and I know you will like her ideas. So, please enjoy her crafty musings today. -  xoxo, Julie

You could call me a fool for fruit.

I have (with reckless abandon and little regard) added to fruit to almost everything my crafty little hands have touched this summer. I would say it’s the summer season that has me in this state but to be honest, it’s really a year-round obsession.

I love the idea of mixing mediums, so naturally this combination peaked my interested. Fruit not only adds bold pops of color but also brings in that ever elusive element of texture. And thus it’s the mixing of textures and mingling of mediums that take a design from pretty to pretty fabulous.

Check out the following for ways to bring this festive idea to ‘’fruition’’. Excuse the bad pun ;)

The Inspiration: Color Contrast

For Jessica’s spring wedding, the bride knew she wanted to play up the color pink. What better way to do this than to place pretty pink tones against the crisp coolness of Granny Smith apples? Petite bouquets comprised of spray roses, garden roses and antiqued hydrangeas sat in marked contrast to the backdrop of green apples stacked in clear glass cylinders. Set against the green of the grass surrounding Moore’s Mill Country Club, the effect was subtle but still surprising. And perfect for a summer soiree. *photo by Tristan Cairns

The Inspiration: Organic

Green apples were once again the focal point in this low arrangement used to mark guest tables at Oakbowery Plantation. The heavy emphasis on the color green paired perfectly with the lushness of this outdoor setting. *photo by Lucky Photography

The Inspiration: Lemon Yellow
When bride Morgan told me she wanted her primary color to be a ‘’lemon yellow’’ I immediately knew fruit would play a part. For her festive summer wedding at Fountainview Mansion, the vibrant palette popped against the coolness of the pool and subtly of the surrounding landscape. Lemons were the theme and the result was a zesty combination of cobalt blue and vibrant yellow! *photos by FlipFlopFoto.com

The Inspiration: Something Blue

Bride Erin requested a classic look, centered around the color blue for her summer wedding. Like Morgan, her wedding was also held at Fountainview Mansion so we knew the blue of the pool would be a focal point. To set off the blue of the hydrangeas, I once again turned to my old friend-the Granny Smith apple. The crispness of the green was a bold contrast to the classic coolness of the blue and the combination was perfect in this lush outdoor setting. *photos by Carson Studios

Peyton and Tyler – Married!

This wedding makes me smile all over! Peyton and I knew each other through a mutual friend as we all were in the events industry here in Auburn. Peyton planned events for the College of Science and Math at Auburn University. So, when it came time for her own wedding, Peyton was smart enough to know that she couldn’t handle the day all on her own. To be sure, she is one of the most detail oriented people I know and I loved following her progress in her planning. But, she decided to ask me to oversee her wedding day activities and make sure they all went as planned.

I was thrilled to be her wedding planner! Peyton has great taste and working with someone in the industry who knows events from a different angle is kind of a treat. We both knew the vendors well, we both knew how things should go. It was great! It was a warm wedding in July. But, things were perfect as guests gathered for a beautiful ceremony at Auburn United Methodist Church and then for the wedding reception at the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Art. A Toomer-tini greated guests (homage to Auburn’s Toomer’s Drugs Lemonade), station dinner and dancing on the patio. My husband, Dallas, served as my dutiful assistant that day and we had a blast. It was more than clear that Peyton and Tyler were happy, happy, happy!

So, here are the highlights from their wedding. It was gorgeous! Thank you to Greg Johnson of Greg Johnson Photography for the wonderful photos. Congratulations you guys!

Leah and Nathan: An Auburn Wedding {Auburn, Ala}

In case you didn’t know, Invision is based in the lovely and wonderful college town of Auburn, Alabama. Home of Auburn University. Home of the 2010 NCAA Football National Champions. Home of many other fine things. Anyone from the South knows what SEC football means to people here. Especially when those people are recent graduates of Auburn and have decided to have their wedding here.

Leah and Nathan chose Auburn as their wedding destination because of all the fond memories that they had of the town that served as the best backdrop as they fell in love with each other. They picked December 4 as their perfect date. Or, so they thought. You see, in Auburn, football season rules everything in the fall. There are no weddings on home football Saturdays. And who would want to have a wedding during an important game anyway, right? The date of Dec. 4 was chosen at least a year ahead of time with the thought that there was no way that Auburn would be playing any post-season games. Surely our beloved Tigers would still be “re-building” and not be in contention for a chance at the SEC Championship game (always held the first Saturday in December). To everyone’s happy surprise, Auburn completed the season undefeated and were indeed scheduled to play in Atlanta for the SEC title. On December 4. At 3:00 PM. And if they won this game, they would be on their way to the National Championship game. As if a wedding needed any more excitement added onto it.

I worked with Joni, Leah’s mother, as their wedding planner to make their wedding one of the most enjoyable that I have ever been to. In terms of design, Joni and Leah’s taste was flawless. Vintage inspired, winter theme. Warm ivories and golds and browns. Details abounded. The biggest issue was how to bring together a warm and inviting wedding and the fact that everyone will be on pins and needles about the game. So, with humor and style, Auburn football was included in the day and nothing overshadowed the excitement of the bride and groom on their wedding. As fate would have it, Leah and Nathan had an unbelievably gorgeous wedding and the Tigers won. It was the perfect day for these two Auburn graduates and their Auburn friends and family gathered around them.

So, I bring you the amazing photos from that day. Many thanks to genius photographer Rob Smith at FlipFlopFoto for capturing the spirit of the day perfectly. I’m still drooling over these photos. Thanks to Leah and Nathan for asking me to be a part of their day. I loved it!

My absolute favorite photo. Classic. For those not from Auburn, this is the top of the university’s iconic Samford Hall. I still can’t quite figure out how this angle was achieved. Regardless, I love it!

The wedding party. This time on the lawn in front of Samford Hall.

The Graphic Designer’s Wedding

I am attempting to resume my series of posts on wedding invitations and how they define or relate the wedding style long before the wedding happens. Today, I will write about Lauren and JP’s wedding printing (see previous post for a wedding overview). While Lauren wouldn’t be categorized as strictly a graphic designer, based on her wedding printing, she could be considered as such.

I have a deep admiration/appreciation/love for all things printed and well designed and seeing Lauren’s printing made me smile from ear to ear. To be sure, this is not your traditional wedding printing. This printing is very stylized and completely true to Lauren and JP’s personality as a couple and it definitely related their wedding style to their guests as a preview of what is to come.

This is what I try to get my clients to understand when it comes to their invitations and printing in general. Everything with your wedding starts with the invites. It’s the first thing your guests see. It encompasses your entire event on paper. It dictates the formality of the wedding. It gives the personality of the wedding. And when you consistently carry it through the entire wedding, you have put together a complete package for everyone to enjoy.

So, I will start with their invites. Then, I’ll move on to how they carried their theme through out the entire wedding. Genius photography by Our Labor of Love. And….enjoy!

I think the addition of the paper cranes just made all the other printing come full circle.

Lauren and JP: Art Meets Wedding {LaGrange, Ga}

I’m playing more wedding catch up. This particular wedding is one of my favorites. I’m always excited to work with the truly artistic. It’s so refreshing and lots of fun. It makes my job as a wedding planner so great.

To that end, I give you Lauren and JP’s wedding. Lauren is, quite possibly, one of the most artistic people I have ever met. Seriously. Graphic design, photography, sculpture, paint. You name it. I am quite impressed. Lauren contacted me to direct her fabulously artistic wedding and I was very excited.

A little wedding background: their wedding was taking place in Lauren’s hometown of LaGrange,Ga, where she had also finished her degree in fine art (note some of their photos done in the art gallery where her senior work was on display). Their wedding was relatively small: 80 guests or so. Ceremony at the Methodist church downtown and then reception at her parent’s house. It was a great setting. JP and his family were from Germany, so they had a several German-themed menu items and of course good beer. Lauren had been making origami cranes since she was a child. Kind of a habit almost. So, she decided to incorporate them into the wedding. The bright colors were chosen carefully as well. If there are any designers out there, they will understand when I say that Lauren chose the process colors CMYK as her color palette – Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black. An homage to her art training. A summer wedding. Bright, exciting colors. Happy, happy couple. It was a good wedding.

I will apologize in advance for the amount of photos that I am about to put up. But, I can’t stop myself. I had the good fortune to work with awesome photographer Matt Miller of Our Labor Of Love – a studio in Atlanta whose work I had been admiring for a while. They have a contemporary style in terms of wedding coverage. The style fit Lauren and JP to a T and one I personally love.

So – on with the show!

Believe it or not, there are some things that didn’t make into this post. Be prepared for the resuming of the posts about invitations and how they relate to the wedding – all coming up! Lauren’s printing was beyond. But, I think that you need a little time to take in all their wedding goodness. Happy Sunday!

Nancy and Marcelo – Married!

Seeing as how I have had a few things going on this year (a budding partnership with It’s Your Day Catering, many weddings, holidays, football, etc.), I have let my blogging of gorgeous weddings fall to the wayside. This is bad. So, I’m making up for lost time. Today, I give you Nancy and Marcelo’s perfect wedding on May 1st at the Arboretum at Auburn University. This has to be one of the sweetest weddings I’ve ever had the honor to be a part of. Totally in love couple, small intimate gathering, perfect spring weather. Just lovely.

Here’s the backstory. Nancy and Marcelo were legally already married. They had met in Spain and moved back to the States. Marcelo, a native of Paraguay, couldn’t stay in the States without being married to Nancy. So, they had a simple courthouse wedding. But, they wanted to share their wedding with their family living in the United States, so an intimate affair was planned. While a true southern wedding is one of the best things ever, it is always refreshing to me to work with a couple that has experiences and another culture to bring to the mix. Nancy and Marcelo had this in spades. Their only wish for their wedding was that everything that was planned didn’t overshadow the reason for the celebration – their love for each other and their desire to share this with their closest friends and family.

I give you a few of the beautiful shots that photographer Tristan Cairns took. He captured their personality perfectly. Ceremony site was held at the Auburn  University Arboretum and the Auburn University Hotel and Conference Center provided the perfect reception spot. Florist Jess Margeson of Frou Fou added to the spring feel of the wedding with the cream and peach flowers and cake maker extraordinaire Robin Fowler made a lovely and delicious cake that incorporated the invitation design. Many thanks to graphic designer Lisa Mosow for the custom invitations that were commissioned at the last minute. Her design helped set the tone for the rest of the wedding design.

Now, on to the photos!

Lisa and Hunter – Married!

Lisa and Hunter got married on June 5 in Opelika, Ala. They had one of those weddings just made you so happy. The wedding party was great, the church was packed with friends and family. I loved it! After the ceremony, guests went to the Heritage House for the reception. The historic house has a great patio and lawn area for as much party as you could hope for. The party went on into the late night. A sure sign that they were happy as clams.

A great plus for me was that I got the chance to work with Julie Lowery of Chanterelle Photography for the first time. Julie did a great job of getting the energy and the love that was so easy to see that day. She was awesome (and has a great name!) and I hope to get to work with her again soon!

To round out the vendor shout outs, here is who else had a role in making this wedding perfect:

Sonshine Cakes – Some of the best around. Seriously. I love Robbin Fowler!

Weston Burt Band – Super fun! Didn’t let up for a second!

Blossom Shop – Lisa happened to work at this cute little shop. Not a bad thing when you are planning a wedding! They did a great job.

Hope you enjoy the photos!
