Nothing says summer like sitting in the sun with a good book (and, if you’re like us, an icy beverage). The relaxed feel of the season makes it an especially good time to chill out and escape into a good story, from a juicy celebrity memoir to a lively all-too-topical novel. Whether we’re chilling poolside or lounging on the beach, here’s what we’re reading right now:
Open Book by Jessica Simpson
You don’t have to be a TRL devotee to appreciate this tell-all from one of pop music’s biggest superstars. We love that she goes there, from candidly talking about her on-again-off-again relationship with John Mayer to the real reason she and Nick Lachey called it quits. There’s also plenty of girlboss inspiration from the billion—yes, billion—dollar baby.
Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid
In this buzzy novel from a debut author, a twenty-something Black woman, Emira, starts babysitting for an affluent white woman in Philadelphia. Their relationship gets sticky, fast, especially when Emira’s boss tries to blur the lines of their working relationship. We can’t wait for all of our friends to read this book too, because it’s one we definitely can’t stop talking about.
The Great Blue Hills of God by Kreis Beall
You probably already know about Blackberry Farm, the stunning resort and wedding venue tucked into Tennessee’s Great Smoky Mountains. But this inspirational memoir from the farm’s creative mind and co-founder digs deep into the untold story of how she survived a brain injury and the end of her marriage, coming out the other side stronger than ever.
One To Watch by Kate Stayman-London
Maybe The Bachelor is your once-in-a-while guilty pleasure. Or maybe it’s your permanent Monday night plans. Either way, this story about a plus-size blogger who gets a chance to be the star on a fictitious Bachelorette-style show, will be sure to make you swoon—and perhaps convince you that love actually is possible on reality television.
The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett
Already a New York Times Best Seller, this sweeping sophomore novel, which came out in June, tells the story of two twins who ran away at 16 to live two separate lives, one Black, and one white. Call up your book club for this one, too: you’ll have plenty to talk about after diving into this important read.
