In our next segment of the She Said Yes series, Becca Brown, PR manager for Invision Events, shares the story of how she and her husband Tommy met, as well as their engagement story. On Sunday, October 1, they’ll celebrate their first anniversary!
How did you meet each other?
In the fall of 2012, I started my first job at a brokerage firm in town. As an HR assistant, I looked forward to getting to know and assisting other employees on a daily basis. In January 2013, Tommy Brown walked into my department to turn in his new hire paperwork, which I actually processed and input into the computer. Having been tied up in another relationship at that time, I tried to ignore the butterflies in my stomach. Following that day, we continued to pass each other in the halls/elevators/parking lot at work, but never exchanged a word.
Fast forward over a year later, and my previous relationship came to a screeching halt. I was distraught and had no desire to dive into the dating world again, but later that spring, a girlfriend of mine got me out of the house for a night on the town. I am SO glad I went, because that was the night Tommy approached me and introduced himself! The butterflies were back – and in full force. While he didn’t get my number immediately, it only took him about a week to track it down and call me. We had our first date at Bottega Café one Friday night, and the rest, as they say, is history!
Tell us about your proposal.
Tommy and I dated almost two years before we got engaged. I knew it was coming but thought I’d have a good idea of when that might be. I couldn’t have been more wrong! One Friday, we had dinner plans to go eat at Hot & Hot Fish Club. After a stressful week at work, I was exhausted but more than ready for a glass of wine and a yummy meal. Once I got home, I started changing into my dinner outfit when I heard Tommy let himself in the front door of my house. I yelled hello from my room and expected him to come greet me with a hug, when my Cavalier King Charles puppy, Gus, came flying into my room with a blue satin bow around his neck. Stressed that we weren’t going to make our reservation and wondering WHY on earth Tommy was playing dress-up with my dog, the confusion was setting in. It started to make sense, however, when Tommy came into my room and reached for something sparkly hanging from Gus’ collar…surely, this wasn’t IT?! But sure enough, in my messy little bedroom of my Homewood house, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. After lots of hugging, happy tears and subsequent outfit changes, we met all our family and friends at his grandparents’ house for an evening of celebration (there was no Hot & Hot reservation). It was so perfect for us, and looking back, I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way!
